IUI – Intrauterine Insemination Treatment

Achieving Pregnancy with IUI at Monash IVF KPJ Johor

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is one of the simplest and least-invasive fertility treatments available in Malaysia for couples who are having trouble getting pregnant. It works by placing concentrated, motile sperm directly into the uterus to increase the likelihood of fertilisation.

This procedure has helped many couples achieve their dream of becoming parents, especially when facing mild male infertility, unexplained infertility, or cervical factor issues.

Monash IVF KPJ Johor is recognised as one of the leading clinics for IUI treatment in Malaysia. As pioneers in IVF and assisted reproduction, our clinic has performed countless successful IUI procedures since 1994, providing hope and expert care for families across the country.

In a natural cycle, only a small number of sperm reach the fallopian tubes, especially in cases of low sperm motility. IUI improves these odds by delivering a high concentration of healthy, motile sperm closer to the egg.

The IUI Procedure in an Infertility Treatment Cycle

Here is a step-by-step overview of the IUI process in a typical treatment cycle:

Cycle day 1

Contact your fertility specialist or your fertility clinic in Malaysia on the first day of menstruation to begin the IUI cycle.

Cycle day 2-4

Visit the clinic for blood tests and an ultrasound to confirm cycle status and check for ovarian cysts.

You may begin oral, vaginal, or injectable fertility medication to stimulate follicle development. The choice of medication will depend on the woman’s age, ovarian function, and prior treatments.

Cycle day 10-12

Additional blood work and ultrasound will be done to assess the ovarian response to medication. Once the ovarian follicle has reached the appropriate size, the woman will be given a “trigger shot” to stimulate ovulation.

Day of Insemination

Approximately 36 hours after the trigger shot, you’ll return to the clinic for the IUI procedure:

  • The male partner provides a sperm sample 30–60 minutes before the procedure.
  • The sample is processed via sperm washing to remove debris and concentrate healthy sperm.

Using a thin catheter, the sperm is placed directly into the uterus.
The procedure is quick, minimally uncomfortable, and does not require anaesthesia.

FAQs about IUI in Malaysia

IUI is a fertility treatment where prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus to increase the chances of pregnancy.

Most patients experience minimal discomfort during the IUI procedure, similar to a Pap smear.

IUI is suitable for couples with unexplained infertility, mild male factor infertility, or cervical issues. Your fertility specialist will assess your medical history and recommend IUI if it’s likely to be effective for your situation.

The success of intrauterine insemination (IUI) depends on several factors, including age, diagnosis, and whether fertility medications are used.

According to WebMD (2024):

  • Women under 35 have a success rate of around 13% per cycle
  • Ages 35–37: about 10% per cycle
  • Ages 38–40: about 9% per cycle
  • Over 40: between 3% to 9% per cycle

Success rates can be higher for specific groups:

  • Unexplained infertility: 7%–10%, increasing to 15%–25% with fertility medications
  • Male factor infertility: around 16.9%
  • When only one fallopian tube is open, rates range from 11.7% to 38.1%, depending on the location of the blockage

While individual outcomes vary, IUI remains a widely used, safe, and accessible first-line fertility treatment in Malaysia.

Look for clinics with experienced fertility specialists, transparent pricing, and strong patient reviews. Our clinic, Monash IVF KPJ Johor is known for its expertise, advanced technology, and supportive care, making it a top choice for IUI in Malaysia.
