Semen Analysis (Spermiogram Test)

Semen analysis, also known as a spermiogram or seminal fluid test, is a key diagnostic tool for evaluating male fertility. It measures the number, movement, and shape of sperm in a semen sample to help identify possible causes of infertility.

Serving the Johor Bahru community since 1994, Monash IVF KPJ Johor has been a trusted fertility clinic for semen analysis and other fertility tests for the past two decades. As pioneers in the field of assisted conception, we are committed to helping couples achieve their dream of becoming parents through comprehensive fertility screening.

The Semen Analysis Procedure at Monash IVF Malaysia

There are several steps involved in the semen analysis procedure at Monash IVF KPJ Johor, including:

Initial consultation with a fertility specialist

The process begins with a consultation with one of our fertility specialists. This can be done as part of a full fertility health check for both you and your partner, or you can come in on your own for a male fertility assessment.

Seminal fluid sample
collection

The next step is to provide a semen sample. You will be directed to a private area and given a sterile container to ejaculate into. Once you are done, cap the container and place it at the designated area. For reliable results:

  • Refrain from ejaculation for 2 to 7 days before the test
  • Avoid alcohol, smoking, and overheating of the testicles during this period

Laboratory analysis of sperm quality & quantity

Our laboratory specialists will examine your sample within an hour of collection to ensure optimal accuracy. The semen is analysed under strict lab protocols to evaluate key parameters of sperm health and functionality.

What Does a Semen Analysis Test Measure?

In a semen analysis test, various key parameters are measured, including:

  • Sperm count. This measures the number of sperm in the semen sample.
  • Sperm concentration. This measures the number of sperm per millilitre of semen.
  • Sperm motility. This tells us how well the sperm moves.
  • Sperm morphology. This tells us about the shape and size of the sperm.

Our fertility team evaluates these criteria and more to provide a comprehensive report on the quantity and quality of your semen and sperm. Healthline stated that a typical sperm count ranges from 15 million sperm to more than 200 million sperm per milliliter (mL) of semen. Anything less than 15 million sperm per milliliter, or 39 million sperm per ejaculate, is considered low.

When to Consider a Seminal Fluid Analysis Test

Fertility screening tests such as semen analysis provide valuable insights into reproductive health, enabling timely decisions for family planning.

Semen fluid analysis test is recommended for:

  • Couples trying to conceive for over a year without success
  • Couples undergoing fertility treatments
  • Men with a history of infertility or medical issues affecting fertility
  • Men who want to take proactive measures to assess their reproductive health

Based on your results, our specialists can recommend lifestyle changes or treatment options to support your fertility journey.
